Coláiste Chiaráin Success Continues in the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2022

For the second year in a row students at Coláiste Chiaráin claimed the top prize in the Junior Category in the recent virtual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

Second year students Rosemary Lucey (14) and Sarah-Jane Noonan (14) won the Junior Physical, Chemical, and Mathematical Science category with their cost-cutting and recycling project ‘How much Sauce is left in Condiment Bottles?’. The team investigated the amount of waste sauce left in the bottle after the user thinks it is empty, while looking at the consequential impact this has on the environment. Through their research they also looked at the optimal bottle type for reducing such waste. They were also awarded the Williams Lea Ireland Award for their project, a special award that acknowledges the best use of graphic design in both the display presentation and the project report book.

This year the school was also represented in the exhibition in the Intermediate Technology Category by Seán and Sarah O’Sullivan with their website ‘ClimateActionHow.com’, which aims to educate, inspire and call us to action in the fight against climate change.

Coláiste Chiaráin which is one of 18 post-primary community colleges in the region under the patronage of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, recently opened a multi-million euro state-of-the-art new school campus in Croom, County Limerick. This development is helping to deliver one of the broadest and varied curriculums and an excellent suite of extra-curricular activities to the school community and clearly Science is one of the many areas excelling as a result.

Coláiste Chiaráin Principal Gerard O’Sullivan praised the excellent work of the students and their Science teacher Edel Farrell who has helped to create a vibrant environment for students to experience and achieve in the wider science and STEM areas. “We are delighted for our students, their achievement is wonderful and is a great end to the many, many months of hard work and dedication committed to their project. We are all so proud of their success.”
