Foreign Language to Make Fantastic Addition to Curriculum at Glenroe School

Staff and pupils at Glenroe are delighted with the news that they have been successful in their application to engage with Post-Primary Languages Ireland to provide a six-week sampler module of an additional language in Terms 2 and 3 this year.

Head Teacher, Julie O’Connor, was excited to inform parents, pupils, and the wider school community about the wonderful opportunity as preparations for returning to school got underway in August.

The study of foreign languages allows younger students to develop their listening, cognitive and personal skills while connecting with other cultures and the school can now decide the language they want to introduce. The next step will be to secure a language teacher or language assistant from a secondary school, or a member of the community who is fluent in the preferred language to deliver the classes. This will help strengthen the link between the school and the community in Glenroe/Ballyorgan and, according to Ms. O’Connor, the school will continue to engage like this with the wider community to help enhance the learning experience for all the pupils.

Glenroe, as a satellite classroom of Mol an Óige CNS, is the first Community National School in Limerick and is part of a growing network of community national schools throughout Ireland. The school prides itself on providing a child-centred education where staff encourage pupil development through a rich and diverse curriculum with a particular emphasis on languages, wellbeing, technology, arts, and natural sciences. Community National Schools are co-educational, multidenominational schools underpinned by the core values of excellence in education, care, respect, equality and community. The ETB is patron of two other Community National Schools in the region: Mol an Óige, Ennistymon, and Raheen Wood, Tuamgraney.

This inspiring new initiative will give pupils the opportunity to expand their experience with languages while building confidence in their primary school setting ahead of their transition to secondary school where they can continue to develop these skills.

In other news, the school also welcomed an additional 10 pupils this term and is delighted to extend a very warm welcome to the new families who are ready to embark on their own educational journey with Glenroe Community National School.
