Learners from Youthreach in Glentworth Street, Limerick visited the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) recently to take part in the OCO’s human rights education programme as part of their Junior Certificate CSPE Action Project.
Eight learners and their teachers departed Limerick on the 7:40am train from Limerick to Dublin in order to make our 11am appointment with Karen the Education Officer in the OCO. Karen very kindly took us through the responsibilities and duties of the OCO. She encouraged all to partake in the presentation allowing opportunities for feedback and questions, once completed we moved on to a workshop on human rights where she identified our rights under the UNCRC. During their visit, the young people from Youthreach raised a number of issues and queries relating to children’s rights, expressing their concerns about homelessness among children, young people and families.
Finally we were shown a video of a young person who had been homeless and what the OCO was able to do for this person. Learners from YEC Glentworth St asked questions and one particular student thanked everyone in the office for such an enjoyable and educational visit. We arrived back home at 6.40pm after a great day.
