Youthreach Miltown Malbay win prize at St Patricks Day Parade

We based the theme of our parade entry on the local legend of “Mal of Malbay”.
She was a sea hag who fell in love with Cu Cullainn and chased him across Liscannor bay. She slipped and was dashed against the Cliffs of Moher and that’s the story behind Hag’s Head.
The students spent 3 weeks creating Mal and her fishy friends which was integrated into their Craft and Design Fashion Module. We had great fun using recycled materials to build our different characters. We had jelly fish, a mermaid, an octopus and of course Mal herself. We researched how to build a giant street puppet and made a towering and magnificent creature which was just as well because on the day of the parade she had a gale to face. But with the stoic support of the students in their fishy costumes they guided Mal through the parade and into glory with Miltown Malbay Youth Reach winning first prize in the walking category. Well done to all!
