Brian O’Donoghue Appointed New Principal of Castletroy College

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board has today confirmed the appointment of Brian O’ Donoghue as the new Principal of Castletroy College in Limerick. Brian succeeds Pádraig Flanagan in the role and will take up the post in September. He has been Principal of Ennis Community College and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir since 2017 where under his leadership student enrolments increased significantly and the campus underwent a major extension and refurbishment programme.

Commenting on the appointment, George O’Callaghan, Chief Executive of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, said: “I would like to sincerely thank Pádraig for his significant contribution to Castletroy College in his role as Principal and to education locally, regionally and nationally down through the years. I congratulate Brian and his family on his appointment as Principal at Castletroy College and wish him every possible success and happiness as he embarks in this new role.”

Brian O’Donoghue is a graduate of Maynooth University, where he qualified with a Bachelor of Science degree. He later completed a Higher Diploma in Education at Trinity College, Dublin, and a Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership. Brian began his teaching career at St Munchin’s College in Limerick, where he taught Biology, Science, and Mathematics. He was appointed Deputy Principal at the school in 2011 during a period of significant expansion.

Welcoming his appointment, Brian O’Donoghue said: “I am really looking forward to working closely with the entire school community of Castletroy College in the months and years ahead. I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead and to continue to grow the legacy of the school through the support of the ETB.”

Brian has served as Secretary to the Limerick Principals and Deputy Principals Association and has also been a board member of Limerick Education Support Centre. In addition to his role as Principal of Ennis Community College and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir, Brian also oversaw significant growth and diversification of programmes offered to school leavers at Ennis College of Further Education. He was also pivotal in developing and introducing a common application process for post-primary schools in the Ennis area. Brian has presented nationally on behalf of the ETB in sharing the experience of Provision Mapping at Ennis Community College, one of the first schools in the country to deliver this initiative.
