College of FET, Mulgrave Street Campus Celebrates National Award Win for Student Photographer

Limerick and Clare ETB’s College of FET, Mulgrave Street Campus is celebrating the fantastic success of student photographer Gidion Obaze, who was crowned Sports Photographer of the Year at the National Student Media Awards 2026, held at The Burlington Hotel, Dublin.

Gidion’s award-winning work stood out for its striking and creative style, blending elements of sport and high fashion to produce powerful, stylised images. His achievement highlights the exceptional talent being developed within the college’s photography programme.

The success was part of a strong showing for the campus, with several students also receiving nominations across key categories, including News Photographer of the Year, Sports Photographer of the Year, and Photographer of the Year.

Jake Rowat and Gidion Obaze were nominated for News Photographer of the Year, while Holly Hennessy and Gidion Obaze were nominated for Sports Photographer of the Year. Holly Hennessy was also nominated for Photographer of the Year.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and passion,” said Eoin McCarthy, Assistant Principal of the Arts and Media Department. “Gidion’s win, along with the nominations, reflects the hard work and creativity of our learners and the strength of the programme.”

The photography department at Mulgrave Street Campus has a strong track record at the awards, with 25 nominations and 17 winners to date.

Also recognised on the night was the college’s student newsletter iINK, which was nominated in the Small College or Society Publication of the Year category. Students Michael Quinlivan and Tobias Heydemann represented the publication at the awards ceremony.

This success reflects the vibrant creative community at Mulgrave Street Campus and its continued commitment to supporting students to achieve excellence at a national level.
