Over the past six years students and staff at Youthreach Education Centre O’Connell Avenue have donned their running shoes and enthusiastically took on the challenge of the 10k section of The Great Limerick Run. This year was no different when year eight students and two staff members Kate Flynn and Roisin Cleary took part in the run.
On the day of the run the students gathered enthusiastically in anticipation of the big race. This was the first time many of these young people had taken part in mass participation event and they were very excited. They thoroughly enjoyed the Zumba music and dance during the pre-race warm up and they took off from Pery Square at 1:30 pm in the sunshine. Unfortunately weather conditions changed drastically during the race and at one stage a fellow runner described the rain as “biblical”. But this setback did not dampen the spirits of our students, and they all successfully finished the race.
Shane Cullinane, Youthreach Co-ordinator commented that “The Great Limerick Run is a wonderful opportunity to promote health and fitness amongst our students, and a great way to get them involved in a fantastic local sporting event”.
