Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board has today received notification in writing by Limerick City and County Council of a decision to grant planning permission for the building of the new post-primary school in Croom. Welcoming the news, George O’Callaghan, LCETB Chief Executive, said: “LCETB is delighted that the next stage in the development of Coláiste Chiaráin can begin shortly. I would like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly for their help and support in achieving this outcome.” The new post-primary college will cater for 850 students. It is expected that the new building will be open by September 2018.
The new school development on the 22 acre (8.9 hectares) site at Skagh, Croom, consists of a 2 storey building of almost 10,000m², incorporating over 60 teaching spaces which will facilitate delivery of the widest-possible curriculum. The development of pitches and external play areas on the site, together with a full-sized PE Hall will provide for a diverse range of extra-curricular activities. In addition, the inclusion as part of the project of a Special Education Needs Unit will ensure that the educational needs of the entire school community are met.
The value of the building project will be between €15 and €20 million and will greatly enhance the social and economic infrastructure of Croom and the surrounding area.
LCETB was established in July 2013 as an amalgamation of the Limerick City, Limerick County and Clare County Vocational Education Committees. Its administrative area covers all of County Limerick, including Limerick City and County Clare. The statutory authority has responsibility for 18 post-primary schools, including the recently awarded patronage of a new Community College for Limerick City South-West. The existing schools in its provision serve in excess of 9000 students.
