Future-Focused Learning Showcased During Ministerial Visit to Limerick and Clare ETB

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board was pleased to welcome the Minister for Education and Youth, Hildegarde Naughton TD, to a number of ETB schools across Limerick recently, as part of a visit showcasing the breadth and quality of education provision across the region.

During the visit, the Minister toured four ETB school settings: Glenroe School, Castletroy College, Limerick Community Special School in Mungret, and Thomond Community College. Across the day, she met with students, staff, school leaders, and members of the wider school communities, with a focus on student voice, inclusion, school development, and Education for Sustainable Development.

At Glenroe School, the Minister, accompanied by Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD, was welcomed by staff, students, parents, ETB Board representation, and senior leadership. A guard of honour and student performance set the tone for the visit, followed by a student-led tour led by 6th class pupils.

At Castletroy College, the Minister engaged with special education classes, Junior and Senior Cycle students, and met with Politics & Society students and Student Council members, highlighting the school’s strong commitment to inclusion and active student participation.

Minister Naughton got to see first hand the building progress at Limerick Community Special School during her visit.

The visit continued at Limerick Community Special School, where the Minister heard about the school’s development since opening in September 2024 and viewed progress on the new school building, reflecting the growth of this school community.

The final stop on a busy schedule for the Minister was Thomond Community College where she attended an event hosted by Limerick Education Support Centre on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The event showcased how schools are embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into teaching and learning, and included the official launch of the publication Teaching the Sustainable Development Goals to Young Citizens (10–16 years): A Focus on Teaching Hope, Respect, Empathy and Advocacy in Schools, edited by Dr Anne M Dolan, Mary Immaculate College.

Limerick and Clare ETB welcomed the Minister’s recent visit and her engagement with students and staff across all four schools, which provided a valuable opportunity to highlight the diversity and strength of education across the region.
