Coláiste Chiaráin Croom: LIT Sports Junior Hurling Coolderry Cup Champions 2018/2019

Congratulations to Coláiste Chiaráin and their management team who won the Junior Hurling Coolderry cup last Friday with a final score of 3-10 to 3-8 against Coláiste Ide agus Iosef School, Abbeyfeale. It was a thrilling game of hurling which produced 6 goals played in Mick Neville Park.

From an early stage, Coláiste Chiaráin had the better of the exchanges with both teams missing early chances.  Sam McNamara scored the first point to put Coláiste Chiaráin on the scoreboard with a strong wind helping Croom in the first half. In the second half nothing really separated the teams. Jack Daly’s puck outs set the stage against a strong wind and allowed the half back line to skilfully move the ball into attack. They were ably helped by the mid field Conor Twomey and Evan O’Donnell whose work rate was for all to see. The half forwards battled for every breaking ball with Mark Renouf scoring a well worked goal putting Croom ahead. Coláiste Ide agus Iosef worked hard and reduced the score to 2 points. Stephen O’Dwyer played a key role in providing a link to the Croom attack. A key goal followed, scored by substitute Cathal Mangan, providing a gap of 5 points in the favour of Croom. Coláiste Ide agus Iosef School dug in and fought their way back. The backs were under severe pressure.  The class of Darragh O’Keefe shone through as he defended Croom’s centre back line. Coláiste Ide agus Iosef School reduced the deficit to 2 points after a well worked goal. It was a nervous last few minutes. Croom backs stood up, Jack Lynch, Jake O Connell and John Foley ensuring a goal was not scored. Coláiste Chiaráin held out to win.

Afterwards, Brian McNamara accepted the LIT Sports Junior Hurling Coolderry Cup on behalf of Coláiste Chiaráin. Congratulations to all the boys and their managers Mr. Richie Flannery and Mr. James Galvin.
