Youthreach Shanagolden were delighted to have been awarded the Amber Flag for recognition of their promotion of positive mental health. They were in good company with Kilrush Youthreach being awarded also along with primary and secondary schools, community colleges, scouts, Men’s shed Ballincollig, students union UL, and many others much and varied but Youthreach stood proud and strong amidst them all.
Alan Quinlan is the ambassador for ‘Suicide Aware’ and particularly the Amber flag project and he presented them with their flag. He gave a really thought provoking speech rounding it off with a poem that he loves and goes to in times of darkness. The theme of poem being that a young boy running a race to win it slipped and fell, got up and kept going’to win’ slipped and fell again and got up and kept going still’to win’ and falling for the third time almost gave up but didn’t, he got up and kept going but this time not to win but to show himself that no matter how many times he fell down he always got back up, he crossed the finish line last and the crowd went wild giving him a better cheer than the lad who came in first.
“Our learners gave us a great day out and we all thoroughly enjoyed the time spent, the food eaten and the fun and the laugh we had driving down and back up, a pet day, definitely good for thr head.”
