Portrait Presentation to Limerick and Clare ETB Board Honours Donogh O’Malley’s Educational Legacy

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board recently hosted a special commemorative event at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh to mark the presentation of a portrait of former Minister for Education Donogh O’Malley as part of national commemorations recognising the 60th anniversary of his landmark introduction of free post-primary education.

The event brought together members of the Board of Limerick and Clare ETB, school representatives, invited guests and students at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh, one of the ETB’s 17 Community Colleges.

The portrait, painted by renowned Limerick artist Declan Chambers, was presented by Michael O’Dwyer, who is coordinating elements of the wider commemorative programme taking place over the coming years. The commemorations honour the legacy of Limerick-born Donogh O’Malley, whose reforms transformed educational opportunity for generations of young people across Ireland.

As part of the initiative, limited-edition framed prints of the portrait are being presented to educational institutions throughout Ireland. The portrait will also be displayed across Limerick and Clare ETB’s Community Colleges, providing students and school communities with an opportunity to reflect on O’Malley’s lasting contribution to Irish education.

Speaking at the presentation, Chairperson of Limerick and Clare ETB, Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon, reflected on the significance of O’Malley’s reforms and their impact on generations of families throughout Ireland.

Bernadette Cullen, Chief Executive of Limerick and Clare ETB, said the initiative provides an important opportunity for schools to engage with the history and continuing importance of access to education for all.

Students from Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh also contributed to the occasion through musical performances during the event.

The portrait presentation forms part of a wider programme of commemorations taking place over the coming years, including lectures, concerts, documentary productions, academic events and civic tributes recognising Donogh O’Malley’s enduring legacy in Irish public life.
