‘Call & Response’ Festival Sparking Creativity in Limerick and Clare this September

An exciting new festival will take place in towns and villages across Limerick and Clare this September. ‘Call & Response’ is the second youth music and arts festival presented by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board’s Local Creative Youth Partnership and looks set to be just as popular as last year.

Throughout September, young people in Limerick and Clare are being invited to take part in a range of creative events both online and in outdoor settings like parks, marquees and handball alleys, as the festival delivers a wonderful trail of music and arts events. These will include workshops on song-writing, instrument playing, theatre, make-up, visual art, and craft and painting, spanning all genres and ages and all levels from beginners to advanced.

Some of the highlights to look forward to in Limerick include Young Dreams, a musical festival in Bruff to mark what would have been Dolores O’Riordan’s 50th birthday; and Fealefest in Abbeyfeale, with masterclasses from some of Ireland’s most respected traditional musicians. In Kilmallock, to mark Culture Night, the Foróige Youth Project will present an exhibition of craftwork and in Limerick City, St Mary’s Community will host an online music workshop. Limerick Youth Service will also take part in the festival sharing some of the fruits of their summer music residency programme at the Nicholas Street Youth Space.

In Clare, there will be music workshops in Kilkee Community College and a pilot theatre programme will take place in a marquee on the grounds of Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee for three Saturdays in September. There will also be a free outdoor visual art workshop with local landscape artist Ruth Wood at Querrin Pier’s handball alley, and Clare Youth Service will host an online make-up workshop with make-up artist Ellen Walsh Kerley.

Limerick and Clare Education and Training board established one of three national Local Creative Youth Partnerships (LCYPs) in 2019, under the auspices of Creative Ireland, an all-of-government programme that connects people, creativity and wellbeing. Guided by the voice of the child and young person, the LCYP works in partnership with state and voluntary agencies to deliver creative programmes for young people in out-of-school settings, across Limerick and Clare with a particular focus on marginalised communities.

The partnership includes representatives from local authorities, youth work, early years, arts and education; as well as from several areas within Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. Working partners include Limerick Youth Service, Clare Youth Service and Foróige, with whom the LCYP has already delivered creative programmes in dance, photography, drama, craft, makeup, film and in a range of visual art genres.
